This weekend, I got to visit SPACE (Soundscape Projection Ambisonic Control Engine) based at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica “Gioachino Rossini (roughly translated as the Rossini Conservatory of Music).

SPACE is situated inside LEMS (Laboratorio Elettronico per la Musica Sperimentale) and is a 3D sound space capable of playing back field recordings and compositions designed and recorded specifically for it’s 21 speaker system.

I also got to meet David Monacchi, director of the project who’s fascinating research takes him around the world to record soundscapes of remote rainforest ecologies.  David is also a composer and sound installation artist who teaches at the conservatory.
