I usually don't write too much on my blog, but this wants me to write – helping a global internet blackout to strike out against SOPA and PIPA.

I'm participating tomorrow and will be having a countdown banner in the main area of every page on my blog until the bill is stopped.

You can participate in a few ways.

1) Write your Senator

2) Black out your website by embedding this code:

<script type="text/javascript">var a=new Date,b=a.getUTCHours();if(0==a.getUTCMonth()&&2012==a.getUTCFullYear()&&((18==a.getUTCDate()&&13<=b)||(19==a.getUTCDate()&&0>=b)))window.location="http://sopastrike.com/strike";</script>

3) Embedding a banner in your site that counts down to the day that Congress will vote on the bill at the Senate. The code for that is here:

<br/><br/>

You should participate. It's important. You can also read more here: http://sopastrike.com/

Hey blog readers. Thanks for following along with me over the past few months.

I wanted to draw your attention to some pretty dangerous stuff happening in US Congress right now.

It could affect our intellectual, economic and educational health as a country – the Internet Censorship Bill.

Learn more and take action below from Homes Wilson.

The Internet Censorship Bill took a massive beating last week (yeah, you did that!) but drug companies, movie studios and the Chamber of Commerce do *not* go down easy.

Now– get this– they're telling Congress it's a "jobs" bill.

This is dangerous. Everyone in Congress is desperate to do something to create jobs. Now the most powerful lobbies in Washington are banging down their doors, saying "this is your (only) chance to pass a jobs bill."

Since Congress is away for the holiday, there's one priority: sign up as many people as possible for a massive call-in day when Congress returns.

Click here to join in, by committing to call your Senator

Since the House's "SOPA" has such a bad name (yes, you did that) lobbyists are moving their weight behind the Senate version, PIPA ("The PROTECT IP Act"). The Senate's censorship bill is just as bad; it's only missing a few of SOPA's extra-crazy provisions, like the ones that could send you to jail for singing a pop song on YouTube. The website blocking provisions are all there. Still, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid thinks that with the attention on SOPA, he can sneak PIPA through quickly when Congress returns.

Reid needs to know this bill won't move forward without a fight. That's why we're organizing a call-in day for Tuesday, using the same tools that our heroes at Tumblr used last week. It's kind of perfect. While Congress rests we've got 5 full days to sign up friends, colleagues, Twitter followers– everybody. Then on Tuesday we'll unleash a storm of phone calls.

Click here to sign up, and then get others signed up too.

This weekend, instead of nobly vegging out on the internet, you can fight for the future of the internet and freedom of speech. Every ounce of time you spend counts.

Signups now, phone calls Tuesday. Start your engines.

 Holmes Wilson
Fight for the Future / AmericanCensorship.org

P.S. Are you a Tumblr user? We just put up a special section with extra-easy instructions for Tumblr users to add a "Stop Censorship" button to their site: http://americancensorship.org/#tumblr

“…the key to unlocking the creative potential of our existing digital tools might be to build a service that simplifies and consolidates the way those tools can be connected.

By providing a simple logical structure, if this then that, along with two fundamental properties that fit into that structure, called triggers and actions, ifttt enables anyone to be creative in their digital environments. Essentially it’s event-driven programming for the masses.

However, ifttt isn’t a programming language or app building tool, but rather a much simpler solution. Digital duct tape if you will, allowing you to connect any two services together. You can leave the hard work of creating the individual tools to the engineers and designers. Much like in the physical world when a 12 year old wants a lightsaber, cuts the handle off an old broom and shoves a bike grip on the other end, you can take two things in the digital world and combine them in ways the original creators never imagined.”

2010 was a very busy year for me.

After returning from Australia where I worked with the inspiring CuriousWorks building youth media capacity, I came on board at MEDIA ARTS Center San Diego to help them build a new media lab through workshops, events and youth media camps. It’s been fantastic! Not only are we at a point where we can ‘hand off’ some workshop teaching to the community (no small thanks to Chris Anderson, MACSD’s DAS Corps Member this year), but we’re looking forward to renovating our new facilties to make way for a movie theater, recording studio and video editing suites!

All in a new 6,000 square foot space in North Park to house our new ‘digital gym‘. Read on for the highlights of this year…

1) DJing, VJing and Setting Up the New Media Tent at the San Diego Latino Film Festival (March 10th-20th, 2010)

I got to DJ, VJ and webcast in the evenings at the festival. Throughout the 11 days, the Tent had nearly 1500 families, teens, artists and seniors step inside to try their hand at new media performance equipment, sign up for our enewsletters and register for workshops.

2) Expanding MACSD’s Digital Media Programming

Our programming includes 12 monthly workshops in digital fabrication, DIY/design, audio, video, and web design. We’ve since brought in over 100 people this year.

3) Developing a dedicated following of new parents and middle school kids

Much of this was done through our media camps. My favorite part was the accompanying exhibition at the end of each camp.

4) Getting Interviewed By KUSI – In the Middle of Teaching Media Camp

This was pretty sweet. We ended up using the footage they shot in Revenge of the Evil Piñata – one of my favorite movies made during our media camps.

5) Hiring a new Lab Program Manager (myself) and Lab IT Coordinator (our DAS Corps Chris Anderson)

Chris rocks. Period.

6) Relaunching SHARE.SD to provide a monthly home for electronic music makers in San Diego

We brought in over 60 new and emerging media artists in through our doors.

7) Hosting the first meet up for Open San Diego

Their mission is to make data about San Diego freely available for everyone to use. They’re now helping out with New Media Rights‘ awesome Drumbeat San Diego event (sponsored by the Mozilla Foundation).

Live Sampling and Remixing Session For Career Day at Crawford

This I think was probably my favorite moment for all of 2010. Melissa Johnson and myself went in to Crawford to do some outreach for our Teen Producers Project. I brought a mic, Ableton Live, an amp an M-Audio MIDI controller and started to ‘do my thing’ – beatboxing and doing live sampling/remixing in front of class. What started off initially as 10 teens exploded into about 30 – the kids had texted their friends in other classrooms to ditch their sessions and come to the ‘cool’ class (or at least I’d like to think we were pretty cool. Either way – AWESOME.

9) Hosting ‘Start the Motion: Media For Environmental Advocacy’

This was a movie screening of local high school students’ stop motion animations. Brought it well over 100 people to our new space. Score!

10) Marketing, developing and teaching 10, week-long youth media camps

That’s right. 10 camps. 1 instructor (with help from Chris and Georgina for a few of them thank goodness! I’d probably have ended up in a straight jacket had it not been for these two) We got to work with over 64 middle school students resulting in over 10 blogs, 2 websites, hundreds of photos, over 40 short videos and animations, 6 digital comic books and countless hours of mentoring and figuring out where that USB stick went….

11) Working with AWESOME Staff

Okay, 11 things. I’d be remiss to say that I did this all alone. I had amazing support from fellow staff. Big ups to Ryan, Melissa, Chris, Patric, Son, Rhonda, Lisa and of course our awesome boss Ethan – how this man can remain SO patient as MACSD grows is truly beyond words. As Ethan would say, ‘Thanks for all your help!”

We know how hard it is to find good useful tools that all of your developers and designers out there spend hours searching for. And for that reason, we’re regularly collecting useful online web services, tools and resources — little time-savers that can boost every designer’s workflow and save time that would otherwise be required for mundane tasks.

You might have seen some of these tools in our Twitter stream or on our Facebook page, but certainly not all of them. We’ve prepared the most useful ones (yet not necessarily the most beautiful ones) in this handy overview for your convenience. Please share any further tools with us and our readers in the comments to this post. As usual, we express sincere gratitude to all designers and developers out there who create, maintain and improve these tools as their little side projects. You really make the difference, guys. Thank you.

You may want to check out our previous round-up, Time-Saving and Educational Resources for Web Designers, as well.

Useful Web Serivces, Tools and Resources

FontFuse: Gallery of Font Pairings
FontFuse is a font pairing design resource that displays font pairings and hence helps you compare and choose fonts. You can browse through fonts as well as font families, and explore the most recent, most popular and contest-leading font pairings.

Little Big UI Details
This site features tiny details that improve the user experience of websites and mobile apps. You’ll find some useful design techniques found by your colleagues across the Web. Also, share your favorite little things on the website as well. The collection is already very useful, with more design examples submitted every single day.

A Sampler Page
While physical books are traditionally well defined and structured objects, digital books live on screens that vary greatly in their dimensions. In this A List Apart article, Craig Mod dives into the similarities and differences of these media and presents the baseline for designers who want to produce beautiful and readable text on a tablet.

Readability: Enjoy Reading, Support Writing
Another handy little helper that gets rid of the unwanted clutter. Readability allows you to choose your preferred settings (font size, margin and style) and applies them to any website. Drag the bookmarklet with your saved settings into your bookmars bar or folder, visit the website of your choice, click on the bookmarklet and you get a good, comfortable read. Besides, readability offers a way to compensate writers and publishers without punishing readers. 70% of all membership fees go directly to the people who make the content.

Prey: Rest Safe
This tool is small but efficient open-source application that lets you track your laptop or phone in case it gets stolen or lost. Once the Prey agent is installed, it waits to be activated over the Web or via SMS, sending back information on its exact position.

Ge.tt
With Ge.tt you can turn any type of file into web content and share it instantly. You just click on and select files and share the files with your friends or publish the data online. You may want to check an alternative, Crate, as well.

Lanyrd: Get More Out of Conferences
Lanyrd is the social conference directory that lets you keep track of what is going on around you, both as a conference speaker and visitor. You can use the tool with frameworks (it works out of the box with Rails 3) and check out an application with a gemfile for development. A detailed instruction is available on the app’s main web page.

BuildorPro
BuildorPro runs through your browser, and so the browser becomes your development environment — meaning that every time you change your code by hand or through the visual tools, the changes are instantly reflected in the design window. Currently in beta.

foxGuide: Photoshop Guides Inside Firefox
foxGuide is a Firefox extension that displays horizontal and vertical guides. These guides appear as thin lines that float over the webpage. You can move or remove them just the way you do it in Photoshop.

GridBookmarklet
The tool allows you to interact with a grid directly inside the Web browser. (Most alternatives involve overlaying a static grid image onto the page.) Just drag it to your bookmarks toolbar, and then any time you want to check that everything is properly aligned, click on the bookmarklet, and a grid will be overlaid on the current page.

URLi.st: Share and Sync Your Links
URList not only enables you to create and save link lists easily and share them via Twitter or email with coworkers and friends, but also lets you access those links from anywhere. And creating lists is dead easy. Just drag URList’s bookmarklet to your browser’s bookmark bar and click it whenever you want to add a link to the group of links.

Spritebox: Create CSS from Sprite Images
Spritebox is a WYSIWYG tool to help Web designers create CSS classes and IDs from a single sprite image. It is easy and free to use and is based on the principle of using the background-position property to align areas of a sprite image into block elements of a Web page. You may want to check out CSS Sprite Generator, too.

Joliprint
This is an online tool that generates PDFs from Web pages. Granted, it is not the only tool that does this, but it is easy to use and versatile. People can use it as a bookmarklet, pulling it into the Favorites toolbar of their browser and clicking as needed. Joliprint generates a clear, reader-friendly two-column layout, free of ads and navigation elements, and it does it pretty well. Sometimes it removes too much content, though, such as readers’ comments. If you’d like an alternative, give Web2PDF or Notforest a try.

Entitifier
Cleaning up text for the Web can be time-consuming and prone to error. But if a client delivers content in Microsoft Word or a similar format, then cleaning it up is a necessary evil if you don’t want to end up with characters that don’t display properly online. Entitifier does the hard work for you. All you have to do is enter HTML or text, and it escapes nasty characters that should be entities. Just don’t enter text with inline PHP or HTML5 tags, because the tool doesn’t work well with them yet.

The Email Address Obfuscation Debate
Superuser has an interesting discussion about email obfuscation, with opinions from a number of users. Included also are different techniques for accomplishing obfuscation, empirical data about its effectiveness and links to other discussions and articles. One interesting technique is to use the obscure
unicode-bidi
and
direction
CSS properties and write the email address backwards: for example,
moc.elpmaxe@zyx
. Plenty of interesting ideas worth learning and discussing. (cc)

Quick CSV Data Convertor
As Web designers, we constantly receive data in Excel and other spreadsheet formats. This works fine when you just need to view the data on your computer. But when you need to upload it to and display it on the client’s website, it becomes a huge pain. This tool takes a CSV or tab-delimited file in Excel and converts it to JSON, XML, ActionScript and other Web-friendly formats instantly. If you want to convert your spreadsheet data to HTML, you might want to give Tableizer a try.

Instant Blueprint
Instant Blueprint is a way to create a web project framework. In a very short time you can get your project up and running with valid HTML/XHTML and CSS. It’s a simple online form where you enter the required information and markup id tags. Then you select options such as, javascript library and document type. This then generates the blueprint you need to get your project going.

Crowdrise

Crowdrise is about raising money for charity and having the most fun in the world while doing it. Crowdrise is way more fun than anything else aside from being all nervous about trying to kiss a girl for the first time and her not saying something like ‘you’ve got to be kidding me.’ http://www.crowdrise.com/about

Social Wish

Ever wonder what happens to all the wish lists you see on popular retail sites? All too often, the answer is simple: nothing. Some people can’t afford everything they want. Others create “Wish lists” that are nothing more than a bunch of links.SocialWish is changing all that. Through one simple website, we’re connecting people to any kind of wish you can imagine, and making it truly “social”! http://www.socialwish.com/static?template=about

By the end of 2009, 213 artists had been named USA Fellows, each receiving a grant of $50,000, for a total of direct investment in artists equalling $10,000,000.
***SPECIAL PROJECT*** StartSomeGood

This is a project my friend Tom Dawkins invited me into and I’m pretty excited to take part and spread the word about it. SSG’s goal is to leverage the power of the crowd to empower people from around the world to launch their own social enterprise. There are so many people with ideas for how they want to make a difference in the world, yet they lack the resources that they need to get started. StartSomeGood connects budding social entrepreneurs with the financial and intellectual capital that they need — all in a fun, engaging and community-driven way.

We’re just about done with our initial IndieGoGo fundraising campaign and are excited to launch soon at StartSomeGood.com
