Last SHARE was a great turnout for our 7th SHARE! We had 4 new jammers who brought their synthesizers and gear and had a really nice 3 hours of solid jamming! Here's a time-lapse video I made of our night – 1 picture snapped every 30 seconds.

SHARE happens every 2nd Wednesday at Media Arts Center San Diego and the next one is August 11th at 6pm.

WordPress For Artists: An Introduction

Introduction

Modern day artists who use the web to either make their art or promote it often have to use a variety of tools to sustain and grow their ‘making’. With the advent of easier and faster ways to develop content for the web (whether that’s a simple ‘portfolio’ web site or a place to upload pictures), the barrier to artists getting ‘out there’ is becoming easier and easier.

We’ve still got a long way to go, but for now here’s some basics to using one tool (WordPress) to get your art ‘out there’.

WordPress Basics

Wordpress is an open-source blogging platform which acts more and more like a content management system (CMS). A CMS is an online system for managing and displaying different kinds of media and content through a website.

Some different kinds of content and media are:

pictures (.jpg, .png, .gif etc.)
videos (.mov, .swf etc.)
text (.pdf, the actual text you read on a web page/blog post)
audio (.mp3, .ogg, .wav)
embeddable videos/audio from things like YouTube, Vimeo or SoundCloud

WordPress provides a graphical user interface for managing these content types. All of these files are hosted on a server (either your own or one provided by WordPress, see below). The locations of these as well as the actual HTML and text that appear in your site are stored in a database. Your website sits ‘between’ this database and a user’s browser, within in your particular ‘install’ ( which is all the PHP files that comprise the WordPress CMS).

Hosted (WordPress.com) vs. self-hosted (download from WordPress.org)

WordPress can also be hosted on your own server space (which you can purchase through something like bluehost.com) OR your WordPress site can be hosted with http://www.wordpress.com.

A self-hosted WordPress site requires downloading it from WordPress.org and following the instructions. Doing this means you can have your own domain name as well as customize your website a lot more (but will need time or a web developer to do it).
A ‘regular’ WordPress site is free, much easier to set up, but you won’t get your own domain name (unless you pay).

Basic WordPress Terminology

Posts
Posts are ’serial’ content that are posted regularly i.e. blog posts, like journal entries. You might use these to embed photos of your latest paintings or art or even upload an mp3 of your latest music. You can even embed HTML code from video/image/audio hosting sites like YouTube, flickr and SoundCloud respectively.

Pages
Pages are more ’static’ content, like an ‘About’ page or a ‘Contact Us’ page. Many artist websites may even have a short ‘Artist Bio’ page and if you need help generating an artist statement for yourself, you can read 5 Articles to Help You Write a Great Artist Bio.

Categories
Categories can be thought of like ‘containers’ for your Posts. When you make a new Post, you check which Categories you want your Post associated with. Where ever you see and click a link on your website to one of the Categories, it will bring up a dynamically-generated page which lists all Posts in that Category. As an artist might have Categories on your site like ‘Projects’, ‘Designs’, ‘Exhibitions’, or ‘Gigs’

Widgets
Widgets are awesome. They are like little ‘blocks’ that you can place around your site with anything you want in them – RSS feeds, code copied and pasted from other websites, multi-media content. Lots of fun. You might create a widget on your site comprised of all the different Categories on your site to help people easily navigate and find your stuff.

Themes
Themes are pre-developed ’skins’ that you can ‘layer over’ your site. The structure and content of your site stay essentially the same, but the Theme will change things like colors and fonts to give different ‘feels’ for your site. They allow to quickly and easily move between two different ‘looks’ for your site.

Plugins
Plugins add extra functionality to your site. If you think of your site as a computer, Plugins are like little ‘programs’ that you can install on it to make it do certain things. For instance, if you are a heavily visual artist, you might install something like the NextGEN Gallery plug in to manage your images into photo galleries and albums placed throughout your site.

How To Webcast Live Electronic Music

My friend Brandon Coffee (a.k.a electracomplex ) recently asked how I run a weekly electronic music webcast with my friend David . For the most part, David and I do hardware only – no software – and it’s all improvised. Doing this is a lot of fun and if you’re looking to engage electronic musicians and fans online , this is a great way to do it. Getting set up is relatively easy and most of the tools are either free or easy to access.

The following are general guidelines for my particular style of improvised jamming, but I think some of the tips and techniques will apply to your own webcast projects:

Make a broadcast schedule and stick to it

I do my show every Thursday at 8pm. In the age off internet ADD, attention is everything – fans, potential gigs, record deals… Sticking with a schedule of regular ‘content’ making online is a sure fire way to build a loyal following.

Set up well in advance of your jam

There are always technical difficulties. Prepare for them. Test to make sure everything works. Make sure you have the right cables. Make sure your internet works. Make a time buffer for these so you can stay on schedule.

Practice good jamming etiquette

Are you willing to ‘pull back’ a bit to highlight what your partner is jamming with? Are you ready to ‘take the lead’ when the beats start getting monotonous? Have some good stuff ahead of time or at least understand what tracks and techniques you have in store for jamming and djing.

Our webcast is completely improvised, but we do have a few ‘patches’ set up ahead of time that we have a good ‘feel’ for too. This ‘feel’ of the patch (dark? Moody? Gentle?) allows us to mix in more easily to the magic that happens when two musicians get together to improvise live online.

Get a mixer

This is kind of a no-brainer. Or at least something that can mix in two sources (a mic for you, your gear – and if more complex – you and your partners’ gear). Our set up is:

Alesis MultiMix 6 (Morgan)
Korg MS2000 (Morgan)
Korg ElecTribe ER-1 (David/Morgan)
Dave Smith Evolver (David)
Access Virus C (David)

As this particular mixer (care of Media Arts Center San Diego) has built in effects, I tend to use them to my advantage to add depth, effects and other goodies to my mixing. Currently, I have an RCA male to stereo 1/8 inch male connecting my mixer’s RCA out to my laptop’s 1/8 stereo inch line in.

Be bold and play what feels good

Only play what you love and what feels good. You’ll be more invested in improving and developing your art for the long run while still being able to ‘feel out’ your creative path as you play. This is not to say be creatively stubborn, but your artistic ‘flow’ is the one thing you should never compromise.

Bonus points if you find others (fellow musicians/performers) who love it too.

12 Starting Points For New Media/Arts Educators

As an educator, I try to integrate these 12 points into the majority of projects I engage kids with while working at MACSD’s Youth Media Camps. Whether it’s setting up youth blog networks, collaboratively developing stories for film or making comic books each lesson or project poses many opportunities to bring one of these points in.

Play – the capacity to experiment with one’s surroundings as a form of problem-solving
Performance – the ability to adopt alternative identities for the purpose of improvisation and discovery
Simulation – the ability to interpret and construct dynamic models of real-world processes
Appropriation – the ability to meaningfully sample and remix media content
Multitasking – the ability to scan one’s environment and shift focus as needed to salient details
Distributed Cognition – the ability to interact meaningfully with tools that expand mental capacities
Collective Intelligence – the ability to pool knowledge and compare notes with others toward a common goal
Judgment – the ability to evaluate the reliability and credibility of different information sources
Transmedia Navigation – the ability to follow the flow of stories and information across multiple modalities
Networking – the ability to search for, synthesize, and disseminate information
Negotiation – the ability to travel across diverse communities, discerning and respecting multiple perspectives and grasping and following alternative norms
Visualization – the ability to interpret and create data representations for the purposes of expressing ideas, finding patterns, and identifying trends

How To Add a URL Into Your Email Messages

When writing an email (or eNewsletter) adding URLs to specific pages on your site (especially when there are a lot of pages) makes it easier for your fans and readers to engage with your site content.Here’s a quick ‘how to’ on doing that.

How To Add a URL To Your Email

Write your email
Open up another tab in your web browser and go to the URL you want your readers to go to in the email you’re about to send
Copy the URL from the address bar (CTRL + C)
Go back to your email
Paste the URL into the email (CTRL + V)
Click ‘Send’!

Why Richard Renaldi Makes Strangers Touch Each Other

Awesome Historical Archive of Electronic Dance Music – 40 Dj Mixes, 407 Tracks

When people ask me what kind of music I like I usually just say ‘techno’, but electronic dance music is hard to describe to people who don’t already ‘know’. It’s got such a long history of being the soundtrack to young people transgressing the boundaries of modern, urbanized life – creating something new, something their own. It’s also a particular history I’ve had the pleasure of sharing and participating in with a few of my closest friends while growing up…

I just found this amazing mp3 archive of electronic dance music dj mixes from the late 70’s onward. In The Oldskool Series: Study of EDM from House to Hardcore 1964-2003, 2rip posted, interviewed, researched and wrote an essay on the major djs, artist, tracks, and people who were there played/related to in the mix – for over 40 mixes:

This project has really built up over time. When I was transitioning into college nearly a decade ago I had seperated a lot of my vinyl collection by year and made a series of mixtapes. These recordings sat in my archive unreleased for years when I decided to post them on my podcast page. The first one I ever posted (which is actually the 4th episode) had a story behind it about what was taking place in the scene at that time.

Each mix led to a story and before I knew it I was ordering books, watching videos and conducting my own research by scheduling interviews. All of this studying led to me identifying major points in time for EDM circuits around the world. This project has become my current pride and joy and if there is anything any of you can do to help drive traffic and stimulate interest I would be very grateful.

The series is not quite finished and I may even go back sometime and fill in a lot of the missing pieces. Feedback is always encouraged but my goal with this is to educate those who simply do not know much about the foundation of our scene and also to bring back that feeling of nostalgia for those of us who were there for all of these exciting points in time.

My fave mixes are from 1993-1997 – Techno Rave Candies, Pure X Rave Enhancer, Rave Krispies – these are artists and tracks my friends and I listened to in sweaty warehouses, large ‘massives’ and summer desert parties.

This is a new project I’ve been working on in parallel with my work at MACSD’s DIY New Media Lab. Also in start-up mode, the San Diego FabLab is “an advanced digital design and fabrication laboratory that allows community members access to high-tech tools in order to actualize ideas through design and fabrication”.

Aside from developing a tighter partnership with the San Diego FabLab offline (they recently set up a FabTag at our New Media Tent at SDLFF), I was involved with the design of their website. I handled all site navigation, content migration and architecture while the lovely lovely Ms. Bea put her designer’s eye to the logo, branding and colors – the look and feel.

The site was built using the awesome Thesis Wordpress theme. I also set up all staff email and online document management using Google Apps.

All in all, a quick, easy site that was a joy to develop with a talented team (Katie and Bea). I look forward to having more involvement with FabLab personally and professionally. They do great stuff.

What I’ve Been Up to at the San Diego Latino Film Festival

These are pictures taken during the past 3 days of the festival so far. Last night was a highlight for me as I had 5 teens to help me out. We had a webcam set up in the lobby streaming to the internet which we were able to stream back in to our video mixer (via an extra laptop) as a remixable stream.

Volunteer DJs and VJs? This is our biggest fundraiser of the year afterall.

This has also been one of my most complex live projects.

Does anyone know how to hook up a DVD player to a projector?

A photo I found online of a painting my great, great, great grandfather painted, The Torn Hat (1820), remixed by me nearly 200 years later. I could even remix his Wikipedia entry if I wanted.

Famous for his portraits of young people, Philadelphia painter Thomas Sully discarded eighteenth-century conventions representing children as miniature adults. Instead, he painted them as children, informally posed and wearing clothing appropriate for their ages. This portrait of the artist’s nine-year-old son features a stylish straw hat with a torn brim-perhaps the result of childish mischief. The device of the torn hat gave Sully the opportunity to display his skill at painting patterns of light and shadow while creating an image of innocence and charm.

The EyeWriter project is an ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people who are suffering from ALS with creative technologies.It is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus & custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes.

Projections on 25th, Live Photoshop Tennis and Cubees

Unfortunately, we had a small turn out for our second DIY New Media Session of the month. Since our workshop was small, I switched it up and decided to moderate a ‘live Photoshop Tennis’ match. We also left the video projection screen up to project videos on to the sidewalk of 25th St.

Projections on 25th
For starters, I left the video projection screen up and let a YouTube playlist of experimental videos (Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, Kenneth Anger etc.) project on to 25th street. People stopped to watch on the street. No one came in though, but at least they were watching…

Live Photoshop Tennis
It’s a bit like Iron Chef…but with Photoshop.

After 30 minutes of instruction on Photoshop basics (which generates the ‘theme ingredient’ template file) each participant is then given 3 minutes to remix that file (on a projection screen) and make it as craazzy as possible before the next player steps up. We generated 7 different variations fro the original. Check ‘em out in the gallery.

Cubees
Randy showed up to. He knows quite a bit on Photoshop and was able to educate Itamar and myself with ease. In his spare time, he make ‘cubees’ – paper craft toys that you can print, cutout fold and assemble into 3-D figures. Check out his collection here.

A Reflection on My Time With CuriousWorks

I’ve always been afraid of two things – bodies of water (in which I cannot see the bottom) and heights. At 7, I was stung by a jellyfish while swimming. That same year, I fell off a rock face and into a crevice of fresh lava rock, gouging and slicing my flesh as I tumbled to the bottom – it felt like I fell for miles. I came to dread swimming and climbing things.

Over 20 years later, I found myself miles in the air flying across the world’s largest body of water. All to work for a small organization called CuriousWorks. I’d not heard of them until just a few weeks earlier and in a few days, I was going to be helping them make media with kids in the middle of the Pilbara – a place few Australians (let alone Americans like me) ever get the chance to see.

With just a single Tweet as the trigger, I was going to be over 10,000 miles away from home, in the middle of a vast desert, in a country I’d never been to…

I dove in.

Some mornings, I had magnificent dreams and awoke to watch the sun rise over the desert landscape.

Other mornings gave me a taste of the complex realities of kids in rural and remote communities.

And this was only the first 5 days of my trip…

My second week in Australia found me in the small mining town of Newman, Western Australia. Newman consists of about 5,000 people with an extra 2,000 as ‘fly in fly out‘). It sits about 1200 km north of Perth in the heart of the Pilbara Desert. Because of it’s remote location, food and water need to be shipped in to Newman’s only grocery store weekly. Pilbara literally, means ‘dry‘.

There’s a cultural thirst here too – particularly for the young people of Newman. Pop cultural artifacts like StarWars, Twilight and Subway sandwiches are lapped up. The kids constantly talk about wanting to see ‘bands in Perth’. In deed, many young people – Newman’s potential future leaders – end up leaving.

Because of this, BHP Billiton recognized the need for a more sustainable and permanent infrastructure – something for the long term. That’s where CuriousWorks came in.

As part of the BHP Iron Ore Legacy Project and in partnership with Country Arts WA, CuriousWorks helped Newman’s kids develop a wide range of skills they could put back in to their community. Some of these skills were gained interviewing locals outside of school. Other skills were nurtured by developing a class website. Our final part of the project was putting on Newman’s first film festival.

In starting the project, Senior Advisor of Sustainability and Community Relations for BHP Billiton, Scott Bird said:

“We really want to contribute something significant to the town that demonstrates BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s commitment to creating liveable communities that people want to participate in for the long term. We expect this project will create a lasting impact on both the community members and the landscape of the Newman Township.”

Over the next 12 weeks, we worked with teachers, students and parents to build the media capacity of Newman’s young residents. We moved between 5 different locations to conduct our after school media-making workshops while teaching new media classes in the primary and senior high schools. It was hectic, but a lot of fun and the kids we worked with were very productive.

The project accomplished some great things with and for the young people of Newman:

our kids got on national television and a national newspaper
our kids launched a student website with an accompanying lobbying website and youth blog
we also learned 33 other things…

And yes, we felt happy to call them ‘our kids’. They are awesome.

While we accomplished a lot while there, we were not without our challenges. For one, we were outsiders, not just geographically, but culturally too; a Sri Lankan, a Lebanesian, a snow white Australian with a slight British accent and an Asian-American made for some curious workers in a predominantly white town. There were even a few incidents where I wondered if I’d been discriminated against because of my ‘outsider’ ness. In a conversation I had with a local school teacher, she offhandedly referred to the film production, internet literacy development, and photography we were doing with the kids as not ‘real’ teaching.

Coming into Newman, we also expected to have a stable teaching space to meet with the youth. We had anything but. Not only did the local youth center close down a week before we arrived, but the places we’d hoped to conduct our media workshops were unreliable, in spite of the dedicated efforts of our staff and our Newman partners. The recently closed youth center hadn’t even been open a year. Where were after school programs for youth going to be held? Where were the creative spaces kids could go to continue their learning, playing and making when the schools closed? Who would lead this?

Clearly, there was and is a lot of work to do. I wouldn’t say the kids we worked with were disadvantaged in the sense that Americans (like my self) normally think – poverty, homelessness, language barriers. I’d say their greatest disadvantage is the lack of a stable, supportive center that fosters the creative skills they already have.

As of this writing, there is still no youth space for the kids of Newman to meet and make media. This is the task ahead for the teachers, residents and businesses of Newman – to grow and build on the things we developed with Newman’s youth. To stay true to our intentions as CuriousWorkers, we need to ensure the communities we work with can serve themselves.

Newman certainly deserves to.
