Short track I worked on this week.  Just a demo – raw and unfinished.   I was inspired by a sweet dj mix my friend Alex Brandmeyer made (he had excellent track selection).  Bug him for it.

New track I just finished. I used Reaktor, Ableton and VST called TALBassline, a Roland SH-101 emulator.  This track is dedicated to fans on the Memeshift Facebook Fan Page.  Thanks for being fans!

This was a track I remixed off of my good friend Louis’s Dubulator project. This particular brand of Louis’ music is harder – and of course dubbier – than his more pastoral pieces under fwdthought. This was a track I made after seeing Plaid play in San Francisco a few years ago.  It’s an oldie, but I was inspired by Plaid’s technique of having really fast, rhythmic percussion in the cymbal/hi-hat frequency range with other rhythms in the lower percussive ranges (like kicks and even snares) slowly merging in to their mixes – this is typified in the ‘Spokes’ era shows.  ’Chud’* is a little bit of this technique mixed with a dubby bassline and an underlying hip-hop beat.

*Oh yeah, and the title for the track – ‘Chud’ is just the first thing that came to mind because I (oddly?) had the movie poster of the movie with the same name in my head as I was thinking up a name (is there a better way to explain that grammatically?).

This is one of my first pieces.  I made it completely in Reason 2.0 in 2001.  I’ve not much to say about it except that it’s probably the most complex ‘tonal’ piece I’ve done.  Lots of different melodies are in it.

This is actually quite an ‘old’ piece. I made this after seeing Squarepusher sometime in July of 2003. I was 23 and think I’d had a bad trip on some wierd mushrooms I ate. Ended up wandering around the streets of San Francisco gibbering to myself, freezing cold, wondering how I’d stumbled out of the club. Once back in though, I had an amazing time. I’d seen Squarepusher a few times before and this was by far, his best performance. He was really ‘with’ the crowd for this show. At first, he started off with some staple favorites and slowly built up to a more and more intense show util at one point, there were maybe 200 people left in the Mezzanine. I guess he’d scared most of the other folks off by the intense strobes, noise and utter craziness of his set. However, as if taking a que from the thinned out audience, those that remained were treated to an AMAZINGLY, beautiful set. He took things down a notch (relatively) and began playing some fresh, very melodic stuff reference Miles Davis and John Coltrane throughout. I’m not too familiar with these musicians, though the person I was with was pretty familiar (being a music major at UC Santa Cruz at the time). An utterly wonderful show.

The following piece was created shortly after. I remember being really tuned in to a lot of the techniques he was trying out on stage and wanted to try automating some MIDI control parameters in what was then, Reason 2.0 in creating this track. I forget most of my technique for creating this track, but I do know that only 1 or two samples were used. The drums I recorded and programmed myself. All of the sweeps and LFO I ‘drew’ in. I also playe a lot with upping the feedback on the delay effects within Reason. I completed this track, in one sitting, in a day. I was pretty inspired by that Squarepusher show.

This is a song I wrote nearly 4 years ago.  I think I’ve gotten all the arrangement down for it, and I’m happy with the sounds though I wonder if there might be a few things to finésse.  There’s a brief bridge in the middle of the song (made with my Alesis Micron) that I’ve sometimes wanted to re-record though perhaps it’s enough?

Track I made today after spending nearly the whole day waiting in the Oakland Social Services office for foodstamps. Humbling and frustrating at the same time.

I don’t think this song is really connected to it. In fact, it’s not. I was feeling pretty mellow and simultaneously inspired.

This song I made while thinking about Luke Vibert and Orbital. I don’t now if it sounds anything like those two, but I kinda like it.

Yes, it is spelled in correctly. This song is partially dedicated to my friend Flynn Witmeyer. He once had a box that he kept his ‘Dark Crytal’ in. He had gotten a hold of a label maker when young and labeled a box of his after his favorite movie.
